ISO 26262 compliance certification underscores commitment to enabling functionally safe industrial and automotive systems
SGS-TÜV Saar, an independent accredited assessor, has formally certified that Freescale Semiconductor’s (NYSE: FSL) Analog & Sensors Hardware Development Process is compliant with the International Standards Organization’s (ISO) 26262 standard for developing functionally safe systems up to and including the most stringent safety integrity level, ASIL D. The certification was formally presented to the company on Wednesday in a ceremony at the Embedded World conference in Nuremberg, Germany, making it the industry’s first semiconductor company to be so recognized.
“The certificate is issued based on a successful Functional Safety Process Audit of the companywide Analog & Sensors Hardware development and production processes against all requirements and work product definitions of ISO 26262 Part 2,5,7,8 and 9 identified as fully applicable under Hardware Safety Element out of Context development. Freescale has done an excellent job on deploying ISO 26262 compliance in Analog & Sensors Group”, said Wolfgang Ruf, Head of Functional Safety Semiconductor at SGS Group, SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH.
Most of Freescale’s Analog & Sensors products are part of the Company’s Safe Assure™ program, which covers a broad solution set of analog ICs, sensors solutions, and MCUs as well as support for functional safety application design like training, safety documentation and technical support. The goal of the program is to simplify the process and reduce the time required for automotive and industrial OEMs to achieve system compliance with functional safety standards.
“Freescale has a long and successful history of providing to the automotive market innovative Analog & Sensors ICs with integrated support for functional safety,” said James Bates, general manager and senior vice president of Freescale's Analog & Sensors Group. “As the world becomes more and more automated, functional safety will become an increasingly important system design consideration to protect from internal system faults and defects. The certification of our Analog & Sensors hardware development process by SGS-TÜV Saar represents additional proof of our commitment to easing customers’ development of functionally safe electronic systems.”
According to the ISO, functional safety is the absence of unreasonable risk due to hazards caused by the malfunction of electrical, electronic systems. ISO 26262 targets complete automotive systems and consists of 10 parts, including clauses for hardware, software, their integration and the development and production processes. SGS-TÜV Saar carefully tailored the assessment scope to all clauses of the ISO 26262 that were identified as applicable.
The resulting ISO 26262 Functional Safety Process Audit certificate issued by SGS-TÜV Saar, ‘FS/71/220/15/00/78`, can be found in the Certificate FS/71/220/15/0078 on the SGS- TÜV Saar web site.
Freescale SafeAssure program: Functional Safety. Simplified.
The Freescale SafeAssure™ functional safety program is designed to help system manufacturers more easily achieve system compliance with functional safety standards: International Standards Organization (ISO) 26262 and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508. The program highlights Freescale solutions – hardware and software – that are optimally designed to support functional safety implementations and come with a rich set of enablement collateral.
