SOTIF stands for "Safety Of The Intended Functionality". In contrast to Functional Safety, which focuses on minimising hazards due to malfunctions, SOTIF refers to potential risks that could arise even if the system functions properly.
SOTIF therefore represents the logical extension of functional safety in accordance with ISO 26262. While the basic standard ISO 26262 explicitly excludes the consideration of functional performance, it is playing an increasingly important role in relevant safety considerations for ADAS functions or highly automated driving.
The ISO 21448 standard attempts to close this gap and builds on established topics such as functional safety management from ISO 26262 and can therefore be seen as a supplement to ISO 26262.
